Office Portable 2010

Compressed archives combine multiple files into a single file to make them easier to transport or save on diskspace. Archiving software may also provide options for encryption, file spanning, checksums, self-extraction, and self-installation. Zip is the most-widely used format, used by the Windows operating system and more recently by OSX as well. RAR is also a very popular and flexible format. Unix uses the tar file format, while Linux uses the tar and gz format.

Note: Since thefirst beta release of Office 2007 I've forced myself to use all of the 2007applications, although I have kept Office 2003 installed 'just incase.' As a result, I've been using the new interface for quite a numberof months.

Significant interface changes

As soon as you load anOffice 2007 application for the first time, it will hit you: 'Whoa.'That was pretty much my reaction, even though I'd seen screenshots and otherdetails. Once it's on the screen in front of you, it's a little daunting,particularly if you're an Office power user. In fact, Office power users willprobably have the hardest time adjusting to the new interface.

Under the hood—that is,once you get into a regular dialog box—you'll notice that many of the dialogboxes are similar to the ones found in older versions of Office, but theelimination of the traditional menu bars requires a different way of thinking. Inshort, the Office team at Microsoft has thumbed their collective noses at thetraditional interface and created a new way of working. Here are some of thehighlights of the new interface.

The Office button

At the very top leftcorner of the Office window, you'll see what is referred to as the Officebutton, mainly because it has the Office logo on it, but also because it givesyou quick access to many of Office's most important tasks. Among these tasks:open a document, save your work, print your document, publishyour work to a shared work space, and a lot more. From this button, you canalso access a list of the most recent dozen and other documents you've workedon.

The Office button alsotakes all of the non-document related activities and puts them in one spot. By 'non-document,'I mean tasks that do not directly relate to the editing task at hand. Theseitems include Open, Save, Print, Close, and more. From the button, you can alsoconfigure overall product options. In Word, for example, you can set yourproofing options, save options and more. See Figure A for an example of what you'll find on the Office button.
