Effective April 9, 2019, Adobe Shockwave will be discontinued and the Shockwave player for Windows will no longer be available for download.

Companies with existing Enterprise licenses for Adobe Shockwave continue to receive support until the end of their current contracts.

Adobe Shockwave is a browser-based multimedia platform for interactive applications and video games. Retiring the Shockwave player for Windows is the last step in a multi-year process: Adobe Director, an authoring tool for Shockwave content, was discontinued on February 1, 2017 and the Shockwave player for macOS was discontinued on March 1, 2017.

Adobe continues to offer a rich set of content creation tools through Creative Cloud, including Adobe Animate for authoring interactive content for multiple platforms, such HTML5 Canvas, WebGL, Flash/Adobe AIR, and others.

As technologies evolve and the use of mobile devices has grown, interactive content has moved to platforms such as HTML5 Canvas and Web GL and usage of Shockwave has declined.

Starting on October 8, 2019, Shockwave player for Windows will no longer be available for download. Adobe is no longer accepting ETLA and EULA agreements for Shockwave effective on April 9, 2019.

Support for individual customers will end on October 8, 2019. Customers with EULA distribution licensing will continue to receive support until the end of their 1-year contract. Enterprise customers will continue to be supported until the end of their contracts in 2022.

Adobe is providing advance notice to help customers prepare for the change. In its time, Adobe Director and Shockwave provided a powerful solution for creating and playing web-based animation and game content. Through Creative Cloud, Adobe offers a rich toolset for modern web content, prototyping, and design, including:

If you have problems installing Adobe Shockwave Player, work through the steps below. After each step, restart the computer to ensure that the changes take effect before moving on to the next step.

Be sure to remove previous versions before you install Shockwave Player. Use any of the following methods:

  • Double-click the uninstaller.exe file in C:Windowssystem32AdobeShockwave <version>. For example, C:Windowssystem32AdobeShockwave 12
  • Use the Add Or Remove Programs utility in the Windows Control Panel.
  • (Shockwave 8 and 8.5) Use the uninstaller available from the Web Players page.

Note: Close all applications before you run the Shockwave Player uninstaller. Quit all running applications, including browsers and instant messaging clients. Check the Windows system tray to make sure that no applications that use Shockwave Player are in use.

2. Download the Adobe Shockwave Player installer

Before installing Shockwave Player, check the following browser settings:

Make sure that the security level is not set to High or to a custom level that doesn't allow viewing of ActiveX controls. Typically, the default security level (medium) allows you to view Shockwave content. For a custom level, ensure that both Download Signed ActiveX Controls and Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins are set to Prompt.

  1. Click Defaul Level, or click Custom Level and do the following:
    a. Find the section ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins.
    b. Set Download Signed ActiveX Controls to Prompt.
    c. Set Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins to Prompt.

If you don't have administrator access to Windows XP SP2 , Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 you can't install Shockwave Player successfully. Administrative privileges are required for the Windows system registry and for the C:WINDOWSsystem32AdobeShockwave folder.

What Is Adobe Shockwave Player
